Projects to make from small fabric scraps Part 1

Hi!

Fabric scraps are something that I think about A LOT. In the course of making our one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces, we produce a lot of small fabric scraps. If you sew, you know! The growing pile of scraps is unavoidable. Because I am committed to operating both FLUX BENE and my personal life with the least amount of waste possible, I am constantly coming up with ways to use all of these little pieces. This wont be the only post I make about scrap solutions.

One of my oldest tried-and-true scrap projects is these little stuffed turtles. I have been making these for friends' babies since 2014, and they are still making expectant moms smile. The sewing pattern for these was published by Makeit-Loveit

As I'm writing, their website seems to be offline, but I'm sharing the link in case the issue is resolved by the time you're reading this. If that doesn't work out, there are lots of small stuffy sewing patterns to be found on Etsy. Patterns like this can turn your scraps into things that will bring a lot of joy. I made this turtle for my friend Katie's very-soon-to-be new baby from hand dyed scraps left over from making this Trail Jacket:

A favorite studio use for small pieces of fabrics is our mini quilts. We use these as pockets for jackets & frocks, and also as back pieces. Our Sketchbook Jacket pattern includes instructions and pattern pieces to make a jacket with many small squares making up the pockets and back piece. For this one, I used all one fabric, but this looks great when the squares are made from many different fabrics, like in the one Jacque is wearing below.

Another project that I love to do with even tinier scraps is make very silly greeting cards:Googly eyes make everything better.

I hope this gets your creative brain swirling with ideas for your own scrap pile. These small pieces of fabric are a constant source of inspiration for me.

Happy Sewing!
